Potato Drop at the Virginia United Methodist Annual Conference, 2016   (use buttons above for other sets of hi-res photos)

With the help of a $1,500 grant from the Virginia United Methodist Foundation, the Society of St. Andrew brought 42,000 pounds of white potatoes from Caribou, Maine to Roanoke, Virginia on June 17, 2016 for a crop drop in conjunction with the Virginia Annual Conference. The potatoes arrived in a tractor-trailer, on skids and in 50-pound “master” bags. Seventy volunteers, including young people from across the Virginia Conference, re-bagged about half the load into 8-10 pound family-sized bags, for distribution through food pantries, shelters, and community assistance programs in Southwestern Virginia. The other half of the load (20,000 pounds) went directly to Feeding America Southwest Virginia, the area’s largest food bank, for distribution through their extensive network, reaching 373 agencies in 26 counties.
