Preventing Waste, Feeding the Hungry
The Society of St. Andrew feeds the hungry in the U.S. by saving fresh produce from going to waste, and distributing it to vital feeding programs in all 48 contiguous states. Each year, SoSA works with thousands of farmers, engages tens of thousands of volunteers, and provides nutritious, fresh produce to thousands of feeding programs across the country.
SoSA addresses this crucial issue in two ways:
In the fields – we mobilize more than 30,000 volunteers every year to glean fields and orchards for remaining fruits and vegetables. Volunteers pick, dig, or gather food remaining after commercial harvest.
At packing houses and distribution centers – When food is deemed surplus, improperly sized, cosmetically imperfect, or unmarketable, the Society of St. Andrew transports it to agencies feeding the hungry. Without our intervention, this food would likely have been shipped to a landfill as waste, creating a large environmental problem.
Healthy Food for Those Who Need it Most
Working collaboratively with thousands of farmers, tens of thousands of volunteers, and thousands of feeding programs in all 48 contiguous states, SoSA provides healthy, nourishing food to those who have little or no access to it.
This nutritious, but excess, bounty is sent directly from the point of surplus (field or packing facility) to where it will be used, and is not stored in a warehouse.
The Society of St. Andrew is nationally recognized for both efficiency and effectiveness, with a total overhead of just 3%! SoSA’s remarkable programs have proven extremely successful at providing good food to those who need it most, while reducing food waste in our nation’s landfills.
